Israel to host Jewish-Germanimmigration conference

23 April 2004

JERUSALEM – Israel will host a conference next month celebrating the contribution of Germany’s Jews to Israeli society, and marking the 70th anniversary of the arrival of German and Austrian Jews to the country, conference organisers said Thursday.

Michael Shiloh, director of the conference, told journalists in Jerusalem, it was important for younger generations to learn about the contribution of early immigrants, as 90 percent of that first wave of newcomers had already passed away.

He said Jews of German ancestry had contributed to the emerging Israeli state in many ways whether in culture and science, or in forming the judicial and economic systems.

The conference, to be held at Jerusalem’s Konrad Adenauer centre runs from 2 to 5 May.
