BERLIN – Hertha Berlin players have dismissed pay cuts, but are ready to pay for their fans’ trips to all remaining away games this season, local news reports said on Thursday.
The reports said that the team leaders planned to present an according motion to club manager Dieter Hoeness.
Travel costs of the fans for the eight remaining away games are estimated at 1 million euros.
Hertha officials asked the players to have a reported 20 percent of their salaries frozen until the end of the season. Hoeness said they would receive the money only if the team avoided relegation.
The pay cut request came after Hertha were eliminated early in the UEFA Cup and played a disastrous Bundesliga season so far. Instead of vying for a Champions League spot as hoped, they languish in the drop zone in 17th place.
