PRAGUE – The red lights of brothels in a notorious Czech Republic town are flickering out now that fewer German sex tourists are coming for a fling with a prostitute.
“For sale” signs have appeared on about half the brothels in Dubi, near the Czech-German border, and all houses of ill repute could close in a few years when a new highway opens between Dresden and Usti nad Labem, Dubi’s town spokesman Jindrich Pech told the CTK news agency.
For years, a two-lane highway that snakes through Dubi has been a haunt of streetwalkers and brothels of various sorts, including wooden shacks with women waving from behind large windows.
But the trade started declining last spring, when Czech and German border police began handing out leaflets to motorists. The leaflets warned about crackdowns on child prostitution and human trafficking.
Pech also said German sex tourists have become discouraged by car thieves who prey on brothel clients.
