German police arrest Turkish terrorist suspects

29 November 2006

Munich (dpa) – Police arrested suspected Turkish extremists during a swoop on homes and offices across Germany, officials said Wednesday.

Among those detained were a 45-year-old man and his wife, 44, who were said to be leaders of the group in the southern region of Augsburg.

Police said some 52 persons, most of them Turkish citizens, were targeted in the raids against the militant Marxist People’s Liberation Party/Front.

The organization, which is opposed to NATO and the US, seeks to overthrow the Turkish government.

Outlawed in 1998, it funds its activities through donations and extortion in Turkey and Europe.

Federal prosecutors in Karlsruhe said on Tuesday that two other suspected members of the group were detained in Berlin and Heidelberg on suspicion of membership of a terrorist organization.
