BERLIN – Six people, most of them Vietnamese, were killed in a car chase near Berlin overnight after police sought to crack down on a gang of people smugglers.
Eight people were in the vehicle which sought to evade a police checkpoint near Kalbow in the state of Brandenburg, which surrounds the German capital.
In the ensuing high-speed car chase, the vehicle skidded in a bend and crashed into a clump of trees, police said Tuesday.
Three of the occupants died on the spot, three others in hospital. Two occupants were seriously injured.
Police positively identified the bodies of one Czech national and one Vietnamese and said the other fatalities were also probably from Vietnam.
