Fischer hails Macedonian leader

26 February 2004

BERLIN – German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer expressed dismay Thursday over Macedonian President Boris Trajkovski’s death in a plane crash but said he was sure Skopje would stick to Trajkovski’s policies aimed at a multi-ethnic society.

“President Trajkovski played a valuable role in strengthening both domestic peace and democratic institutions in your country,” said Fischer in a letter sent to Macedonian Foreign Minister Ilinka Mitreva.

Fischer said Trajkovski’s public support for a multi-ethnic Macedonia was exemplary for the entire region.

“I am confident the Macedonian government will continue to orient itself to this in the future,” said Fischer.

President Trajkovski and eight others died Thursday in a plane crash near the southern Bosnia-Herzegovina town of Stolac.
