English football fans clash with German pubgoers

7 August 2006

DORTMUND – Violence between fans of Premiership club Tottenham Hotspur and patrons in a pub in Dortmund after an international club friendly on the weekend resulted in four people being injured.

Police said Sunday that during the fight bottles and plastic chairs were thrown and in the resulting fracas four people were injured including a Briton who suffered head injuries and had to be taken to hospital.

Only a huge police presence had been able to end the fighting.

The clashes began after Tottenham and Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund drew 1-1 in a friendly and the Tottenham fans – many of whom were under the influence of alcohol – started fighting with patrons in the pub.

Ten people were arrested.
