Electricity ‘theft’ leads to arrest

26 February 2004

KASSEL – German police arrested a 23-year-old student for stealing electricity worth a fifth of a cent, because he plugged his laptop computer into a power socket at a railway station.

Federal police, who patrol the railways, initially detained the man on suspicion of stealing the laptop, but found he was its owner. So they altered the charge to stealing electricity from the railways operator in the northern city of Kassel.

A prosecutor said Thursday the charge would likely be dropped. The man was released soon after the incident.
