FRANKFURT – The European Central Bank (ECB) deferred on Thursday a decision on the design for a landmark headquarters that it plans to build in Frankfurt for its 2,500 staff.
The governing council had been set to pick one of three competing designs for the site, a former wholesale produce market alongside Frankfurt’s Main River. But in a statement, the council said all three designs needed “further evaluation”.
Teams of architects were asked to adapt the rival plans more to the ECB’s specific requirements.
The short-list of three was chosen in February by a jury after 300 entries had been received from round the world and whittled down to an initial 12.
The new building is expected to make an architectural statement by being both monumental and allowing the public to see inside.
The council said it will “continue its deliberations with a view to coming to a conclusion by early next year at the latest”.
