DUSSELDORF – Karl and Theo Albrecht, the founders and owners of the discount supermarket chain Aldi, were again Germany’s two wealthiest persons in 2003 with an estimated combined fortune of EUR 30.3 billion, the business magazine Manager Magazin reported Monday.
The magazine said its research showed that the Albrecht brothers increased their wealth by some EUR 2.3 billion last year.
Older brother Karl Albrecht, 84, topped the list of Germany’s wealthiest persons, at EUR 15.2 billion, while his brother Theo, 82, was reported to have EUR 15.1 billion.
Third on the magazine’s list is Susanne Klatten, 42, a large- scale shareholder in the pharmaceutical company Altana and carmaker BMW, with a fortune estimated at EUR 7.5 billion.
Reinhard Mohn, 83, a great-great-grandson of Carl Bertelsmann, founder of the media conglomerate, was estimated to have EUR 6.5 billion in private wealth, with fifth place on the list held by Ingeburg Herz, 83, widow of the Tschibo coffee company, at EUR 6.1 billion.
Werner Otto, 95, founder of the Otto Versand mail order concern, had a fortune estimated at EUR six billion euros, Manager Magazin said.
