16,000 Iraqis register to vote in Germany

24 January 2005

BERLIN – More than 16,000 Iraqis living in Germany have so far registered to vote in their country’s first free elections, with the registration deadline extended by two more days due to the high turnout, officials said.

One week before the vote, officials of the Berlin-based “Iraq Out- of-Country Voting Program” said that so far 16,393 Iraqis had registered to vote.

Originally the registration deadline was to have been on Sunday. But this has been extended by another two days to permit Iraqis to travel to the sign-up centres in Berlin, Munich, Cologne and Mannheim.

Some 80,000 Iraqis are currently living in Germany.
