Visitation rights for pets?

18 May 2007

BRUSSELS – The non-profit organisation BLID (Belgian National Animal Welfare Inspectorate) is urging that legislation be drawn up to allow visitation rights for pets when a couple divorces.

“The new divorce law is a missed opportunity to also offer pets protection in this situation,” says Dirk Blanchart, chairman of BLID.

Most disagreements about pets involve dogs, to which owners become very attached.

Several cases have been brought to court, but every time the judge has ruled that there was no need for visitation.
