Smoking ban in Flemish schools

29 May 2008

FLANDERS – All schools in Flanders will be completely smoke-free from the beginning of next school year.

The smoking ban at school will apply between 6:30 am and 6:30 pm. No smoking will be allowed anywhere on school grounds, including the playground.

The smoking rooms will be also be abolished. The general smoking ban will apply during school outings as well.

Flemish socialist Anissa Temsamani submitted the draft decree in the Flemish Parliament. The Flemish parliament has approved the proposal.
She says, "We will probably not make ourselves too popular with this decision.

But as a smoker I am the first to admit that an extension of the smoking ban in public buildings to schools is a logical step to implement a better anti-smoking policy."

There were only two votes against the proposal in the Flemish Parliament.
