BRUSSELS – The Belgian army wants to get some of its oldest soldiers working as security agents or lorry drivers, it was reported on Thursday.
The move is part of a plan to cut army numbers from 40,000 to 35,000 by 2015.
Defence Minister Andre Flahaut has already worked out a deal with the Professional Association of Security Companies which would see senior army personnel trained as security guards and then offered a job.
Similar negotiations are still under way with the Professional Union of Transport Companies, which wants to recruit 5,000 more drivers.
