Belgium’s population keeps booming

BRUSSELS – Belgium’s rate of population growth is far from decreasing, with a 16,625 rise in the first half of 2003 alone.

Demographic figures show that there are fewer male than female Belgians. The highest areas of population growth are in Antwerp and the Brussels commune of Schaerbeek.

Figures are dwindling however in the university town of Louvain, Bergen, and the Brussels commune of Uccle.

Belgium’s growth in population can partly be explained by the number of births, but the largest part of the increase is due to effects of migration.

Migration accounts for 75 percent of population growth in the EU.

Belgium counted 10,372,469 inhabitants on 1 July 2003.
