26 February 2004

BRUSSELS – Nine out of ten Belgians have at least one bank payment card, and the Dutch are just as keen on plastic money, according to a survey published on Thursday.

The study, which appeared in French business newspaper La Tribune, shows that the two Benelux countries are Europe’s clear leaders when it comes to using bankcards.

Surprisingly France, one of the few European countries where people regularly still use chequebooks, emerged in third place.

The survey found that 87 percent of French people have some sort of bankcards.

Italy emerged as the European country least enamoured with plastic cash.

Only 57 percent of Italians have a bankcard, the survey found.
