Belgian railway goes on-line

12 March 2004

BRUSSELS – Belgian rail operator SNCB on Friday joined the e-commerce revolution with the announcement that it is to sell train tickets through its website.

SNCB’s system is similar to a popular internet ticketing scheme already run by French train operator SNCF.

Customers choose their journey, class of travel and any other possible options that may be open to them and then pay for their ticket via a secure server, using either a credit or debit card.

They can then print their ticket in the comfort of their own home.

SNCB was quick to point out on Friday that it has no immediate plans to end traditional ticket sales at railway stations.

At present the internet ticketing service only applies to journeys inside Belgium.

International trips are not covered.
