Woman, 70, stabbed to death

A 70-year-old woman was found dead in a poll of blood in her home on the second floor of an apartment block on Melpomènestraat in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek in Brussels. She was stabbed in the chest with a kitchen knife. Her partner was also found in the apartment. He had slashed his wrists, but is expected to live. The man has confessed to killing his wife, the Brussels public prosecutor said. A nurse discovered the woman’s body.

‘Bob’ summer drink driving campaign

Driving and drinking don’t go together, not in the holiday period either. That’s the message of the ‘Bob’ anti-drink driving summer campaign to be seen on television and heard on radio. The Bob campaign will also involve ‘Bob & the gang’ nights at nightclubs, a Bob bus at festivals and intensified traffic controls. The Bob campaign has been active in Belgium since 1995 and has also jumped the border into the Netherlands.

Warning on holiday traffic delays

Motorists associations VAB and Touring have warned for busy roads over the coming few days as holiday traffic leads to congestion. Delays are expected on the E40 to and from the coast and on the E411 and E25 in the Ardennes-bound lanes. The construction works on the Antwerp ring road will also contribute to the problems. European motorways are also expected to be busy with holiday traffic.

Parking inspector escapes rage

A 34-year-old make motorist allegedly tried to run a parking inspector down on Wednesday. The Aalst man was given a parking ticket on the Grote Markt in Aarschot, but tried to take revenge soon after, the Leuven public prosecutor claims. The man saw the parking inspector in the Bekaflaan and allegedly tried to reverse his car into the man. But a bystander pulled the 43-year-old parking inspector top safety. The motorist will appear in court on 3 August.
