10,000 Belgians live in campsites

31 January 2005

BRUSSELS – Around 10,000 people in Wallonia choose or are forced to live in campsites, it has emerged.

The Wallonian regional authorities say it is working together with 28 communes to remedy the situation.

The number of people living in precarious conditions on campsites has doubled in the past ten years.

This situation has in part been caused by communes who, due to budget shortfalls, have allowed people to move voluntarily to
camping grounds.

The Wallonian say they authorities hope to change this trend over the next five to ten years.

An initiative by the town of Philippeville would also allow 24 communes to change recreational zones into living areas.
