Young girl catches meningitis in Geel

24 July 2007

BRUSSELS – A 17 year-old girl from the ‘Chiro van Besselare’ (Youth camp)  became the victim of meningitis while at camp in Geel. She fell ill at the end of last week but the incident has just been reported.

A youth leader who happened to also be a nurse recognised the symptoms. The girl is still in hospital. The 180 youth leaders, cook-parents and children who were at the camp were given preventive antibiotics. Doctors assume that no one else from the group has caught the illness.
