Yet another transport strike hits Brussels

BRUSSELS – Brussels commuters faced misery yet again on Monday as another strike by employees of the city’s public transport operator put half of the capital’s fleet of buses and trams out of action.

Socialist trade union CGSP called Monday’s strike, the latest in a seemingly endless series of stoppages linked to a pay and conditions dispute between employees and management a public transport operator STIB/MIVB.

CGSP spokesman Alex Vonck said on Monday he considered the stoppage had been a success as his union only represents about a third of the STIB workforce.

“When you look at the number of people we represent and look at the number of vehicles that were in circulation, our strike was a relative success,” he said.
