Wrong baby buried

13 June 2007

BRUSSELS – A Nigerian-Belgian couple from Ekeren whose baby died shortly after birth was requested to pick up their child’s remains from the University Hospital in Antwerp for burial on Monday.  The only problem was that the family had already buried their child on Friday, or thought they had at least.

The error was made by the funeral director, according to the Gazet van Antwerpen and Het Belang van Limburg. The undertaker picked up the body of a 16-week-old foetus from the Sint-Erasmus hospital in Borgerhout on Friday.

That foetus was supposed to be cremated, but was not in the end. The funeral director also failed to pick up the child of the Nigerian-Belgian couple from the Antwerp hospital but instead handed over the foetus he had picked up in Borgerhout for burial.
