Workers won’t miss out on holiday

24 April 2007

BRUSSELS – Federal Minister for Employment Peter Vanvelthoven has announced that Friday 2 May will be a public holiday in 2008.

Workers stood to miss out on a public holiday next year since Ascension Day will fall on 1 May, both of which are public holidays. So instead everyone will have both Thursday and Friday off that week.

“It is the most family-friendly solution, since it is also a popular time for first communion celebrations,” Vanvelthoven said.

The minister decided not to opt for 10 August 2008, as the National Labour Council had suggested. “If two holidays fall on the same Thursday, it makes sense to move one to the Friday. Besides, 10 August is a Sunday,” the minister said.
