BRUSSELS – Men carrying out drainage work in a field near the West Flanders village of Moorslede have inadvertently uncovered a major First World War arms dump, it was reported on Friday.
According to army bomb disposal exerts the dump is possibly the biggest collection of unexploded WWI artillery ever found in West Flanders.
The bomb squad has already dug up 350 munitions but expects to find many more.
“We think there are hundreds more,” said major Luc Moerman, quoted by the Belga news agency.
“We are expecting to find around thousand artillery grenades under the soil,” he added.
