BRUSSELS – The Belgian authorities were predicting heavy traffic on the country’s roads on Friday and Saturday as hundreds of thousands of people head off for the Easter break.

Traffic jams were predicted on the E40 motorway for motorists heading towards the Belgian coast and on the E411 towards the Ardennes.

The authorities on Friday advised motorists who wanted to avoid the worst of the congestion either to put off their journey until late on Friday evening or to head off on Sunday.

Friday afternoon and Saturday morning were likely to see the worst traffic problems, the authorities said.

For anyone planning to drive beyond Belgium for Easter, traffic jams are also predicted on major roads in France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
