9 December 2003

BRUSSELS – The second edition of Wallonia’s “key figures” was released Monday, giving a birds-eye view of southern Belgian statistics.

The average number of children per woman living in Wallonia is 1.75, a tenth higher than the Belgian average, while there are more young people for every citizen over 60 in Wallonia than Flanders and Belgium as a whole.

Ten percent of Wallonia’s population is of foreign origin, compared to a Belgian average of 8.9 percent.

The provinces of Liege and Hainaut have the highest foreign population  (11.6 percent and 12.9 percent respectively), followed by the Walloon Brabant (9.1 percent), Luxembourg (4.6 percent), and Namur (4.2 percent).

The number of Walloon commuters has risen by some 15 percent since 1996, rising to 208,792.
