VLD urges extended tax return deadline

13 June 2005

BRUSSELS — The Liberal VLD party executive is urging Finance Minister Didier Reynders to push back the deadline for income tax returns.

The VLD said the public needs the deadline to be pushed back for a variety of reasons.

“Not only is there a new form, but the rules have also changed,” VLD chairman Bart Somers said.

He said the uncoupling of income for married couples has led to increased guess work, newspaper ‘Het Nieuwsblad’ reported on Monday.

Consequently, Somers said he was in favour of granting members of public extra time to complete their tax returns.

The VLD also pointed to problems encountered with the Tax-on-Web product, the treasury’s electronic tax return.

Currently, tax returns must be completed by 30 June at the latest.
