VLD right-winger rejects pact with Vlaams Belang

4 April 2005

BRUSSELS – A senior right winger in Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstatdt’s Flemish liberal democrat (VLD) party has rejected an offer of an electoral pact with the far right party the Vlaams Blok.

Jean-Marie Dedecker, a Belgian senator and one of the most right-wing members of the VLD, said he would not take up the offer of Blok leader Filip Dewinter to form a coalition to fight the municipal elections next year.

Dedecker said the Belang still needed to change its cultural and immigration policies and adopt a real economic programme.

Both Dedecker and Dewinter were speaking during a debate at Knokke-Heist on Sunday when they were questioned on their campaign strategies for the elections.
