Uranium posted to EU and Belgian authorities

9 March 2005

BRUSSELS – Five envelopes containing uranium were sent to the Belgian and EU authorities during the visit of US President George W Bush in February.

The envelopes arrived between 22 and 25 February at the Royal Palace, foreign ministry, European Parliament, NATO and the American Embassy in Brussels.

Scientific analysis of the contents showed it to be pure uranium.

The substance did not prove to be toxic but it had a high radioactive content.

The level of radioactivity is not believed to pose a threat to public health or to the individuals who opened the envelopes.

A criminal investigation has been opened.
