Truck drivers ignore safety distances

09 February 2007

An investigation carried out by the VAB, a Flemish drivers’ association, shows that one truck driver in 5 does not respect the 50 meter safety distance required by law between vehicles driving on Belgian motorways.

The VAB estimations were calculated based on the observation of 2,054 trucks on a segment of the E17 between Gent and Antwerp.

Further calculations taking in consideration both speed and braking distances revealed that in the event of an emergency one truck in two would have hit the vehicle in front of it.

Based on the conclusions of its investigation, the VAB called for more police checks focused on safety distances.
