Transport strike Friday probable

17 April 2007

BRUSSELS – There will most likely be a strike by the MIVB bus, tram and metro drivers on Friday. Unions and the management of the Brussels transport company met on Monday for new consultation but failed to reach agreement.

“If there is no change it seems as if a general 24-hour strike is inevitable,” said Jean-Pierre Alvin, spokesperson for MIVB.

The unions want a salary increase for the personnel during the 2007-2008 period. Management wants to offer a premium instead, but unions are not happy with the proposal because it is a one-off measure.

On Wednesday the unions will inform members about the negotiations, but there seems to be a good chance of a strike on 20 April.
