BRUSSELS – An investigation by the railway police indicates that the trains reportedly shot at in Schaarbeek on Thursday evening were hit by stones, not bullets. The stones thrown were of the type found between the tracks.

Frédéric Petit, spokesperson for rail infrastructure manager Infrabel, announced this on Friday morning. The investigation will continue this afternoon.

Shortly after the incident at about 8.30 pm on Thursday, Infrabel reported that the trains had been shot at. Petit says the incident occurred in the Buda-Schaarbeek area. The train was heading from the direction of Vilvoorde when it was targeted just about 1 km outside of the Schaarsbeek station. There were no injuries.

Four trains were cancelled because of the incident. Another 45 scheduled trains were delayed.
