Train staff on strike Monday

22 June 2007

ANTWERP – The personnel at Antwerp’s Central and Berchem stations have called a strike starting just past midnight Sunday night and lasting for the whole of Monday.

The Independent Union for Railway personnel (OVS) announced this on Friday. The workers are protesting because nine cars in the staff parking area at Antwerp Berchem were damaged while parked there overnight.

The workers are also protesting because the staff parking lot at Antwerp Central is still not ready. “Antwerp Central is a construction site at the moment. We were promised that the parking lot would be finished by September, but we have our doubts because of the construction workers’ holiday,” OVS says.

The management at transport company NMBS have been informed of the situation so that it can urgently work to find a solution, the union says.
