Traffic accidents leave 2 dead

22 October 2007

BRUSSELS – A multiple vehicle accident on the E17 in De Pinte caused serious traffic problems this morning. Two drivers of passenger cars were killed, the East Flanders traffic police report. The traffic congestion continues to be a problem this afternoon.

Officials are considering declaring the emergency disaster plan in effect in Oost-Vlaanderen. A burst tyre most likely caused the initial accident this morning.

The most recent information from the traffic police indicates that the tractor trailer heading towards Kortrijk suffered a burst tyre at about 7.30 am this morning. The truck veered over the divider and into oncoming traffic. Four passenger cars heading towards Ghent collided with the truck. Two drivers were killed. Two other passengers suffered burn wounds. And another two people suffered minor injuries, the traffic police report. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.

The motorway is still closed off in the direction of Ghent, causing serious congestion. The efforts to clear the road will continue for several hours. Another two accidents have occurred in the long tailbacks that have resulted in the Kortrijk-bound lanes.
