Town slaps curfew on teenage ‘delinquents’

3 March 2005

BRUSSELS – The Belgian town of Thuin has decided that youngsters under the age of 16 will no longer be able to go out unaccompanied at night.

The city authorities took the decision at an extraordinary meeting on Wednesday night, to deal with what they saw as the rising problem of juvenile delinquency in the town.

“We wanted to send a clear message of support to the police, to the judicial authorities to make it clear that we want the law to be respected, to the delinquents to let them know that play time is over and to local people to show we are concerned about public order,” explained deputy mayor Paul Furlan.

Under the new curfew system any under-16s caught out at night by the police will be taken home.
