The incident happened on the Olympiade intersection. The Flemish local transport company De Lijn says that tram was travelling from Hoboken to Merksem on line 2 when it was hit by a car coming from the Jan de Voslei.
De Lijn spokesperson Koen Peeters: "The entire first compartment of the tram ended up off the rails. Damage is considerable."
One person in the car was seriously injured, while a second sustained light injuries. A pregnant woman on the tram had to be taken to hospital for treatment.
