Three children critical after fire

2 May 2007

ANTWERP – Three children are in critical condition after a devastating fire last night in an apartment on the Turnhoutsebaan in Borgerhout near Antwerp. The local police have confirmed this.

About 10 people were evacuated from the burning building as a precaution last night. The fire was raging on the third and top stories of the apartment building. The first indications seem to show that the fire started in the children’s bedroom.

Witnesses say the children were home alone at the time.

The fire has completely destroyed the apartment. Other units in the building have suffered some water and smoke damage.

No one was injured besides the children. Police and fire fighters say the three children, between the ages of 3 and 7, are in “extremely critical” condition. They were rushed to the burn unit of the Stuivenbergh hospital where they are now fighting for their lives.
