Thousands of Belgians ‘driving uninsured’

BRUSSELS – Thousands of motorists in Belgium are driving without compulsory insurance, it was revealed on Tuesday.

Citing official statistics, La Derniere Heure newspaper reported that there are between 50,000 and 100,000 uninsured cars currently on Belgium’s roads.

In 2003 uninsured cars were involved in 8,705 traffic accidents or an average of 24 accidents a day, the newspaper said.

According to the newspaper accidents involving uninsured cars cost insured motorists a total of EUR 22,506 million every year.
