Suspected paedophile starts hunger strike

26 April 2005

BRUSSELS – The president of a Belgian charity devoted to tackling organised paedophilia claims he is the victim of a judicial conspiracy.

On Tuesday, it was reported that Marcel Vervloesem had started a hunger strike in prison.

The president of Morkhoven is being held in custody on suspicion of some nine charges of paedophilia.

During the past few weeks, three new complaints of sexual abuse have been made against him.

Vervloesem, who has heart problems, is also refusing to take his daily insulin injection.

Flemish newspapers De Standaard and Het Nieuwsblad reported on the matter on Tuesday.
