Suspect arrested for diamond heist

16 April 2007

AMSTERDAM – Police have arrested one of the two suspects of the large diamond heist at the Antwerp ABN Amro at the beginning of March.

Some EUR 21 million was removed from the safes at the time after inside help from bank workers. The bank worker responsible for the safes has since resigned.

Authorities recently tracked down suspect Eliser M. (47) in Germany, a spokesperson for the Antwerp justice department reported on Monday.

Belgium is requesting his extradition.

The main suspect Yehuda M. (55) has never been caught. He is presumed to have fled to Israel after the heist and has not been tracked down.
