Strike in hospitality industry spreads

25 June 2007

BRUSSELS – Some parts of the hospitality industry continued their strike on Monday. In particular, chains like Quick, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Lunch Garden and Colmar stopped work today.

Workers are striking throughout the country because two employers’ federations refuse to sign the new sector accord. A social mediator has been appointed.

It was announced on Sunday already that strikes would be held in the areas around Antwerp and Brussels.

Information and consultation rounds are being held, explains Alain Detemmerman of trade union ABVV. More actions are planned in the coming days however, the trade unions say.

Peter Vansintjan has now been appointed a social mediator, the federal department of employment, labour and social consultation announced on Monday. He will sit down with the parties involved in the social conflict on Thursday.

The strike started four days ago at the restaurants at Zaventem airport.
