BRUSSELS – Train conductors in Antwerp and Louvain resumed work at about 8 am on Tuesday. “We expect train traffic to be affected until 11 am,” Frédéric Petit, spokesperson for infrastructure manager Infrabel, said this morning.

Train conductors held an impromptu strike at the depots in Louvain and Antwerp this morning to demand safer conditions for personnel. All of the conductors based in Louvain were on strike as of 6 am this morning, while 10 percent of those based in Antwerp were working.

Only about half of the usual number of trains were running on the routes affected. There were also many delays. The train service was expected to gradually increase to regular levels in the course of the morning.

Petit said he expected the situation to return to normal by 11 am. The action caused inconvenience on the following routes: Louvain-Brussels, Louvain-Antwerp, Louvain-Nivelles, Louvain-Charleroi, Louvain-Hasselt, Antwerp-Brussels, Antwerp-Puurs, Antwerp-Sint-Niklaas-Puurs and Antwerp-Roosendaal-Essen.
