STIB to fine drivers on tram tracks

24 September 2004

BRUSSELS – Brussels’ public transport company STIB intends to crack down on motorists who drive on paths reserved for trams and buses, it was reported on Friday.

The aim is to free up zones reserved for STIB vehicles, allowing buses and trams to go faster.

A pilot project is under way at Avenue de la Chasse in Etterbeek, with the assistance of the local police.

STIB already has the power to fine drivers who get in the way of trams and buses, but until now, has only fined motorists who double park on roadsides.
