BRUSSELS – Foreign students are believed to be spying in Belgium, according to an anti-terrorist group.

The Mixed Antiterrorist Group (AGG), which collects information on and analyses terrorism threats, has warned that some students are spying on expatriate colleagues, Flemish newspaper De Standaard reported.

“These spy-students have been ordered by their respective governments to monitor the [expatriate] political opposition here in Belgium,” said AGG Director Luc Verheyden.

The students allegedly involved in spying come from China, Iran, Rwanda and Burundi.

“In addition to their espionage activities, they are also effectively studying in Belgium, so it is hard to prove that they are making inappropriate use of their student status,” added Verheyden.
