Speeding officer goes unpunished
19 March 2007
BRUSSELS – The court in Tongeren has decided to lift the penalty for a 48-year-old police officer from Bree who was caught on a police camera speeding on his motorcycle while off duty. The officer had taken the film from the police camera to avoid a penalty.
However, so as not to put the officer’s further career in jeopardy, and since he had a clean record and no history of any misconduct, the man will not be penalised, on the condition that he does not commit any offences during a probation period of three years.
The officer had been caught speeding on a police camera on 3 June 2006. He then drove back to the mobile speeding camera and removed the film. He was penalised by his superior on the police force and gave a full confession. He also showed regret and asked the court to show clemency.
