Speed radars cut accident rate

BRUSSELS – A new country-wide network of speed radars has cut serious car accidents by 25 percent, according to the Belgian police.

The new statistics are the result of a survey commissioned by the Flemish authorites and carried out by a team of expert researchers based in Antwerp.

On the three most important Belgian highways, all types of accident were reduced by 14 percent, said the researchers.

The only exception was accidents causing just material damage where no drop was recorded.

In terms of accidents fatalities and injuries a more significant 27 percent fall was noted.

“Fixed radars are more efficient for serious accidents than for those with material damage,” said the research team.
