Madrid — The number of confirmed swine flu cases in Spain has risen to 44, Madrid’s health ministry announced Sunday, but only six victims were still being treated in hospital.
The new tally added four more cases to the total announced earlier Sunday, but 38 of the 44 cases were out of hospital, having responded to treatment, said the ministry.
All except four of the cases concerned people who had recently returned from Mexico, the ministry added.
The number of suspected cases being tested for the A(H1N1) flu virus had fallen from 83 to 67, said the ministry.
The World Health Organisation’s latest global tally of the spread of the disease reported that 18 countries had officially reported 898 cases.
They included 506 confirmed cases in Mexico, the centre of the outbreak, including 19 deaths.
The United States had reported 226 laboratories confirmed human cases, including one death, said the WHO on its website.
Spain is currently the worst affected country in Europe.
