Published on 10/03/2008

Bart Somers was re-elected chairman of the Flemish liberal party on Saturday and Bart De Wever was re-elected almost unanimously as chairman of the Flemish nationalist/separatist party N-VA.

With 69.45 percent of the vote Bart Somers was re-elected chairman of the Flemish liberal Open VLD party on Saturday.

His challenger Margriet Hermans only got 22.6 percent of the vote. Christian De Stoop won 7.89 percent. A total of 23.6 percent of the Open VLD members voted.

Bart Somers is pleased with the outcome. He highlighted a number of goals including more political stability in Belgium, together with Open VLD’s Francophone sister party MR.

Bart De Wever elected chair of N-VA again

For the party chair elections of the Flemish separatist party N-VA Bart De Wever was re-elected with 98.89 percent of the vote. He was the only candidate.

55 percent of the 10,000 N-VA party members voted.

Mr De Wever sees the overwhelming score as an approval rating for the position N-VA is taking in the formation of the government-in-making of Prime Minister designate Yves Leterme.
