Flemish Environment Minister Hilde Crevits was present yesterday when the 10,000th solar energy installation in Flanders was installed. It was installed at flower nursery Gediflora in Oostnieuwkerke (West Flanders). The company installed solar panels over a surface of 1,200 meters². The investment cost €500,000.
Solar panels are becoming more popular – both for companies and for families. According to Minister Crevits this is due to rising energy prices, but also to the subsidies given by the government.
The Flemish government has committed itself to a 6 percent level of green energy by 2010.
There are some 140 large-scale photovoltaic installations in use in Flanders at the moment. 1 in 250 families also has a solar installation. Last year this was only 1 family in 800.
During her visit to the Gediflora flower nursery this morning Environment Minister Crevits launched the ‘Zonnendorpen 2008’ (Solar villages 2008) initiative. In Schelle (Antwerp) 1 family in 89 has solar panels. In Herk-de-Stad (Limburg) 1 family in 115 does and in Zuienkerke (West Flanders) 1 family in 121 uses photovoltaic energy.
