In the event of an accident the signs provide useful information about journey times and alternative routes.
The information on the road signs will help motorists to decide which route to take.
The project is being managed by the Flemish Traffic Centre.
Hajo Beeckman: "As you approach the ring road a sign will tell you your journey time to the next intersections.
"In the event of an accident, journey time will increase and drivers will be encouraged to take an alternative route."
If the project is a success, it will be extended to the Ghent and Brussels orbital ring roads.
